Being told you have a uterine polyp can feel concerning, but the good news is that most polyps are non-cancerous (benign) and treatable. Here’s what you need to know and what steps to expect next.

What Is a Uterine Polyp?

A uterine (endometrial) polyp is a small, soft growth that forms inside the lining of the uterus (endometrium).

Common Symptoms

Some women may not have any symptoms at all, but uterine polyps can cause:

  • Irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Difficulty conceiving in some cases

How Are Uterine Polyps Diagnosed?

Ultrasound

Hysteroscopy – a camera-based procedure that looks inside the uterus

  •  What Are the Treatment Options?
  • Watchful Waiting- If the polyp is small and not causing any problems, your doctor may recommend monitoring it over time.
  •  Polyp Removal (Polypectomy)

Most symptomatic polyps are removed through hysteroscopy – a minimally invasive procedure done through the vagina and cervix (no cuts on the skin). It’s often done as a day procedure with quick recovery.

Removal is recommended if:

  • You have irregular bleeding
  • You’re trying to conceive
  • You’re postmenopausal
  • The polyp looks unusual on imaging

 Biopsy or Lab Testing

The removed polyp is sent for lab analysis to rule out any abnormal or precancerous changes.
