Preparing for Hysteroscopy Surgery

How to prepare for Hysteroscopy surgery? 
 
You will be informed about the date and time of procedure. 
Location of the hospital and timing to report at the admission counter will be informed a day before. 
 
On the day of your procedure, bring to the Hospital: 
Your health card 
Your Emirates ID 
All the medicines you are currently taking,
An empty reusable garment bag for your belongings. After you change into your hospital gown, use this bag to hold your clothing and shoes. 
Do NOT bring jewelry or other valuables. 
 
Tell your doctor about
Any allergies you have. 
All the medicines you are taking, including vitamins/ Diabetes medicines/ Blood thinning medicines 
Any surgeries you have had. 
Any problems you or family members have had with anesthetic medicines. 
Whether you are or may be pregnant.
Any medical conditions you have, such as: high blood pressure/ Heart conditions
   
 
The night before the procedure:  NO food or drink after midnight or as directed
 
The morning of the procedure:
 
Remove nail polish before coming to the Hospital. 
 
Clarify with your doctor which medicines you need to take the morning of your procedure.
 

For medicines you take by mouth, take them with a small SIP of water, as directed.  

Reminder! 
For your safety, the responsible adult should accompany you
• Must drive you home or take public or private transportation with you after the procedure. 
• Should stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure.  
 
Before the procedure: 
• The nursing staff will:
 » Ask you to take a urine sample (if you are 50 years old or younger). 
» Ask you to change into a gown and give you a bag for your belongings
 » Take your medical history (including allergies, last menstrual period, medicines)
 » Take your vitals (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, breathing rate)

 » Insert an IV tube into one of your veins.

 How much time does the procedure take?  
The procedure will take about 20 to 30 minutes/ depending on the surgery planned. 
We will give you a general anesthetic through the IV to make you fall asleep.
 
 What can I expect after the procedure? 
  • We will track your blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and blood oxygen level until the medicines we gave you have worn off. 
  • You will be in the recovery room for 4-6 hours.
 
• You may have: 
» Some cramping or discomfort in the pelvis that feels like menstrual cramps, which may last for 2 to 6 days. We can give you pain medicine for this.
» Some vaginal discharges for 2 to 6 days. 
» Bleeding, varying from light spotting to menstrual-like bleeding. 
 
  You will be able to leave the Hospital when: 
» Your vitals and bleeding are stable
» Your support person is present to accompany you home.
 
 We will give you instructions and discharge summary on how to care for yourself before you leave the Hospital.
